First a quick note in response to those who may have been curious why we chose ‘Tops and Flops’ for Friday’s post title. (An old friend emailed to ask… because he didn’t want to point out what looked like a somewhat disconnected and silly title.)
Back in the mid 1970s, there was a rather dingy bar and grill located in Bryan County, Georgia near the Ogeechee River called ‘The Pig Pen’. It had ceiling fans in lieu of air conditioning, wooden booths with no padding, a screen door with an old ‘Sunbeam Bread’ logo on it and a very seasoned grill. The house specialty was the ‘No Bones Barbecued Pork Chop Sammich’ that came on toasted bread, lettuce (no slaw) and a slice of tomato if you asked for it.
Anyway, most restaurants along the coast have the ‘No Shirt? No Shoes? No Service!’ sign hung out on the front door for beach bums and boaters who generally run around in the summer half nekked. But The Pig Pen had ‘Tops & Flops Welcome!’ meaning tank tops and flip-flops were an acceptable degree of dress (in addition to something across the nethers). It was all really primitive but still an undeniably comfortable setting… and the food was good to boot!
The name had popped into my head earlier while pulling out a pack of chops from the freezer for dinner… and sort of loitered there until I figured out something to do with it.
Onward then.
A few days ago, Richard Burkard of Burkard’s Blog of Columbus suggested that we run a sampling of our cell phone ring tones for public opinion. It came in the form of a comment to a post we had run regarding cell phones (ours) and the genuinely stomach wrenching ringtones that came native to them.
Thanks for the great idea, Richard!
Note To Visitors: If these things give yall a headache, blame him… but do please take a moment and vote in our web poll on the side bar.
The poll will run through the weekend and probably until this post drops from sight at the bottom of the page.

Hey — I got something right for a change!!
I vote for #4 — nice and classical. If you’re out covering breaking sin City news, #2 would sound “newsy.”
As for the others: #1 sounds like it came off a European techno-pop disco floor. And #5 would be great on graduation day, for a Caribbean steel drum band.
